9100/9200 Series Power Converter Installation

Progressive Dynamics 9100/9200 Series Inteli-Power Converters can be mounted in any position, without adversely affecting operation. The 9100/9200 Series Converters should have a minimum of 5″ of clearance or sufficient ventilation to ensure adequate airflow into and out of the compartment containing the converter.

Warning

When tightening the Positive and Negative battery leads to the converter, DO NOT USE AN AIR OR ELECTRIC HEX DRIVER! Use of these types of drivers will usually result in damage to the DC Terminal Block and requires the replacement of the entire Terminal Block. These connections must be tightened by hand using a 5/32 “T” Handled Hex Wrench. NOTE: if a converter is returned for repair and the hex head screws have been stripped, the OEM customer will be charged a $20 fee to partially cover the cost of replacing the DC output terminal block.

The 9100/9200 Series Converters incorporate a current limiting feature that prevents the converter from being damaged by trying to supply more current than it was designed for. During production of the RV it is possible that too many 12-volt lights and appliances may be “ON” at the same time exceeding the rating of the converter. If this occurs, the converter will shut down and all lights will go out. To correct this problem simply turn off some 12-volt light and appliances and the converter will resume normal operation. Once a battery is installed in the RV this condition does not occur, as the battery will supply the additional current required during periods of high current draw.

More power for bigger batteriesA few weeks ago I upgraded my batteries from a single 12 volt, to two Trojan T105’s in series. This almost multiplied my amp-hours by 4. I knew I needed a better converter/charger than the original Progressive Dynamics 2 stage unit my RV came with. Installing this new 4 stage 9200 was a breeze. Took all of about 5 minutes. Charges my batteries up to the higher 14.4 volts, and does it quickly. There was nothing really wrong with my old PD converter/charger, but this one works much better. I like the pendant (which mine came with) for monitoring what’s going on.

Works great for Open Range 337RLS fifth wheelPurchased to replace a failed 55 amp converter in my 2009 Open Range 337RLS fifth wheel. I did have to rotate it in relation to how the original converter was installed due to the slightly different layout compared with the old converter so that the wires would reach. Works perfectly and my furnace, which was not firing reliably corrected itself also – I suspect the old converter wasn’t supplying enough power for it to light. It came with the remote pendant, which for now I just ran up to under the bedroom stairs.

Most important about this purchase is the seller, Dune Sport, of Mesa, AZI called them with an issue, I did not receive the pendant that was supposed to come with the converter: due to some miscommunications it did not come with the pendant. I purchased a progressive dynamics converter some ten years ago and found the pendant beneficial. I called Dune Sport; they answered immediately, transferred me to another person that could answer my question, ten seconds later was still talking to a real person and even though I became a little confrontational, they solved my problem to more than my expected solution. When the need arises , I will do more business with these guys. Now for Progressive Dynamics. I have owned several of their devices over the years and have only positive things to say, they work as advertised.

True 70 amp outputMeasured a true 70 amps of charging using a shunt when recharging 4 GC2 batteries after I accidentally drained my 12V backup power system in my home. The variable speed fan is nice, was only as noisy as a desktop computer when kicking out 65+ amps after 10 minutes. 3 hours later it was charging at 59 amps and the fan had actually slowed to about half speed, then shut off completely when charging somewhere above 10 amps. Actually charges at 14.4 volts to start. Also, the cable lugs are solid and take a metric allen wrench.I’m using this for backup/emergency charging for when 200W of solar can’t keep up. I typically don’t loose power for more then a few hours, but this will allow me to quickly recharge my battery bank from a generator during extended power outages.

Better than I expected. The Progressive Dynamics 70 amp converter works great in our 24′ travel trailer. I recently installed a new stereo and amp. When running the stereo the trailer interior lights would dim and the heater didn’t want to start before adding this device. Now the lights are brighter than ever and the heater starts up perfectly. I doubt if I can use enough devices to ever put an extreme load on this converter. It runs very slightly warm. Not an issue. It’s also silent. I have it mounted under our bed where I can easily access the breaker box. Installation was easy. One thing I did that I shouldn’t have done was I used the ground post on the back and grounded it and used the ground next to the hot lead and grounded it to a ground bar. On our trailer this caused the main breaker to trip in the trailer. When I hooked the ground next to the hot lead on the device to the ground bar on the trailer breaker box and did NOT use the additional ground on the device it worked perfectly.

Progressive Dynamics’ customer service is second to none!I’ve had three of this particular model of converter in various RVs, and they work great. I always replace the stock converter with one of these. They supply plenty of power. They are exponentially better than the generic converters most RVs are equipped with from the factory. Your lights won’t dim when the furnace or pump come on, and your battery will never overcharge with a progressive dynamics converter.I am now on my fourth of this model because my third one quit. I believe it was due to moisture, but I’m not sure. I didn’t take it apart because even though it was just over 2 years old, Progressive Dynamics sent me a brand new one! You can’t beat that. I took a shot and emailed them to ask if it was covered, Andy replied asking for the serial# and my shipping address. 3 days later, a brand new Progressive Dynamics converter showed up! Excellent! Thank you Andy at Progressive Dynamics! If you are considering replacing the converter in your camper trailer or RV, go ahead and stop looking. Buy this one. These are also the best battery chargers or 12v power Supply on the planet.

Better than OEMConverter went out on rig and needed to replace. Instead of settling for same replacement, I upgraded to this make and model and I’m glad I did. For starters, this unit can handle more amperage (which is what my mechanic friend recommended) and has a “pendant” you plug in and can see which stage the converter is in (boost, storage, etc.). In addition to the pendant telling you which stage your converter is in, you can manually change the stage if needed simply by following the instructions. Unit was completely “plug and play” outside of drilling new mounting holes. After installing this unit (also have Progressive Dynamics surge protector), my cabin lights have never been brighter (used to go back and forth between bright and dim….thought it was campground grid) and I no longer have the inconsistent power going through my rig.If converter going out, like mine did, would definitely recommend this replacement along with surge protector….this company definitely knows what they are doing and puts out good products.
