How to Wash our Wool Blanket?
Hand wash your 80% wool blanket with wool-specific detergent and cold water, spot clean for light stains, and opt for dry cleaning for heavy soiling to preserve its quality.
Why not washing Machine?
An 80% wool blanket is not meant to be machine-washed because of wool fibers’ self-cleaning properties. Hand-washing maintains its softness, shape, and durability, ensuring it lasts for years.
What is that scent?
The natural scent of lanolin oil in our wool blankets is a sign of their authenticity and quality. Lanolin, derived from sheep’s wool, adds to the blanket’s durability and disappears after airing out.
Does it shed?
Wool blankets initially shed naturally. However high-quality wool blankets shed less and are less prone to shedding. The shedding typically decreases with use.

This a great blanket. This came out of the package with almost zero smell. Extremely comfortable. Keep in mind it is a wool blanket so it has that wool feel but not itchy at all. I own several wool blankets from a few different companies and this is by far the best yet. Well worth the money.

This is my magic blanket!! The thing cools me off when I’m hot and warm when cold!! I love the smell, but I like the smell of gasoline, cigars, and old books too. I like the heavy feel it has when u cover up and it breathes nicely. I’m getting at least two more!!

After seeing some of the negative reviews I feel I should make two quick notes. One: DO NOT WASH THIS BLANKET IN THE WASHING MACHINE! If you don’t know how to care for a wool blanket, don’t get mad and leave a sour review when you ruin it. Take 5 minutes and hit up their website and read up on the care. Washing will cause it for shrink and shed. Spot wash as much as you can. Two: Yes, it smells. It smells just like a wool blanket. When they’re new, that smell is always stronger. As you air the blanket out it will be less pungent, but it’s always there. I used them growing up so I’m used to it, but some people are very sensitive to it to where it smells like some type of fuel. If you notice it but it doesn’t make you gag, let it air out by just spreading it out outside on a dry day, or even in your garage where you can open the door, and it will freshen the wool. I’ve heard of people also rubbing dryer sheets on it after airing it out and it will smell like a newly dried blanket for a long time. But, It just smells like a wool blanket, so you might want to go sniff a real wool blanket and see if you like the smell before buying a more expensive one like this.Overall: Just a great wool blanket. It’s softer than some, not as soft as others. Still great and will get used a lot this hunting season. My favorite feature is the stitching around the edge. It’s about 1/2-1” thick and is super sturdy. The overall quality is definitely 10/10, worth the asking price. If they’re out of stock here, you can find them at the Wolly Mammoth website. It’s where I got mine when amazon couldn’t deliver. Same price for me at the time too. Worth every penny.Softness: 7/10 – it’s wool, not necessarily designed for softness in my experience.Warmth 10/10 – this with my swagman roll makes this dad all toasty and warm.Comfort 9/10 – it’s a super nice wool blanket of very high quality, but do consider its weight. Wool blankets are heavy in general, and this XL one keeps the tradition going. I may buy the smaller one for camping and keep this one in my FJ.

This has been a good, warm blanket. I like it and would recommend this. Lite weight but yest very warm. Reminds me of my Army wool blankets.

I purchased several wool blankets with a Christmas gift card as I do not like the fleece blankets [ warm but they do not breath!]. This was the best of the lot and I really like it. The weave is not as tight as the really expensive blankets but it is still of good quality and it will keep you warm on cold nights. My only complaint is that they need to make a REAL king size blanket, longer and wider [ and maybe offer some more colors too].

This is a great wool blanket! I’ve had lots of wool blankets, from top of the line Fairbault to cheap European ‘army’ blankets made out of ‘mixed’ fibers. So I know my wool. For those who have always used synthetic or cotton blankets, there is nothing like wool for comforting warmth, durability, great temperature regulation and lasting value. This is one of the very best blankets I’ve had. It is fairly light weight but it is incredibly warm. It replaced two other blankets on my bed. It has a very tight weave, it doesn’t shed fibers and the color (Navy blue) is rich and deep. Slight smell of lanolin confirming the wool content. Highly recommended. I’ll come back and update when I’ve had it for a year or so.

Update December 18, 2018:Outdoors has a mild lanolin smell but indoors the smell is stronger.Recommend purchasing a wool freshener. This has a very strong unpleasant scent even after days of being aired out. I purchased a wool freshener used for baby nappies in cold water on a rinse cycle. We have sunny weather this week above 50 degrees so I’ll let the blanket air dry. I’m smell sensitive and had no breathing problems with this blanket- but thought I’d help the next smell sensitive person jump forward. I love to camp and am planning a January car camping trip. I don’t want to be stuck in the car with the smell of this blanket should the weather worsen and I have to retreat to the car. Outside, the smell is barely noticeable. The manufacturer says don’t wash it, but dry cleaning is not an option. I remain enthusiastic about this blanket. I do not like any scents even perfumes. There are some natural scents found in nature that I like and other I don’t. I don’t like the strong scent of this blanket. Skunk is a natural scent and I don’t like it either. If you are sensitive to smells, do yourself a favor and purchase a wool refresher or take it to the dry cleaners. The manufacturer recommends dry cleaning. After washing in cold water rinse-soak- spin cycle with Sonett wool care purchased on RV, the chemical smell is still in the blanket. I am washing the blanket a second time on the rinse cycle only with Sonett wool care then hang outside to dry and will update the results. I can’t be the only person who needs an outdoor wool blanket. I learned the hard way that wool requires special care after washing a 40 year old military wool blanket in regular detergent then dried it in the dryer on high. What a mess.Original review: The Explorer wool blanket is a good, budget-friendly gift for the hiker, car, van, or rv camper in your life and back up blanket for the home. If you like to sew, you could embroider or appliqué something to personalize the wool blanket. I ordered the tan earth colored blanket. After field testing this blanket I plan to personalize this blanket. The wool blanket is a good gift to yourself to use as an emergency blanket for the car or in the home.I like the flat smooth feeling against the skin. The itching is minimal. The scratching is caused by a few hairs sticking up. My plan is to use a sheet or sleeping bag between my skin and the blanket.Another plus is that there is stitching on all sides which minimizes itchy sides. The lanolin scent is mild. I placed my blanket outside for an hour to air out, but the smell is okay out of the bag. I have another wool blanket that took weeks to air out because it had a chemical smell like moth balls. The Explorer lanolin smell was much lighter. I use an inhaler and am very sensitive to smells, but had no trouble with the lanolin smell of this Explorer blanket. For the price, this Explorer blanket is a good value. I purchased a cheap blanket from the RV website in the past and could not bear the smell out of bag, so I can say the Explorer blanket can be used right out of the bag. If the blanket is a gift to someone with a sensitive sense of smell, yes, this blanket has a slight lanolin odor that cannot be washed without ruining the blanket. A person who values natural textiles will understand. A person who does not value natural textiles won’t.This is not a machine washable blanket.Researching the care of wool is important so you understand why the manufacturer does not recommend machine washing. From what I know about many textiles including wool, the manufacturers recommend “dry clean only” so that people don’t ruin the textile then blame the manufacturer.Wool can be hand washed with a product that replaces the lanolin, placed into a spin only cycle in a washing machine, then laid flat to dry to help it keep its shape. But – most people won’t take the time to do all of that work. Instead, most people will throw the wool blanket into a washing machine with regular detergent where it will be agitated and tear the fibers apart, add a fabric softener which further degrades the wool fibers, let it spin, pull it out, then wonder what went wrong when they find themselves looking at what seems to be a creature from outer space. They proceed to throw the blanket into the dryer and wonder how a large blank suddenly looks like a shriveled hot mess. Oh yes, I’ve made that mistake, so I totally understand why a lovely card arrived with the Explorer wool blanket that clearly and simply explained the care of the Explorer blanket. Please take a small moment of time to read the care instructions. The care is easy once you understand the “why.”I am pleased with value of my purchase. Thank you for taking the time for reading my review. I hope you found it helpful.

The blanket is wool but still pretty soft. Way less itchy than other wool blankets I have or have used. I’m a big guy and it covers me very well, length and width are great. I also really like the color I got. It’s pretty thin but warm. I use it as blanket on my bed I don’t take it out camping or anything like that. It looks nice pretty warm, I’m cheap and don’t turn on my heat so I did have to double up the blankets at times, or use even more than that, one won’t be enough if it’s really cold. For me at least.Another HUGE pro, the smell when you get it brand new. It doesn’t smell as bad as other wool blankets I’ve gotten. I could use it right away instead of having to let it air out for a few days.

Bought a few of these to equip our vehicles with emergency blankets. I did a little research between this blanket and another, perhaps more popular, low-cost wool blanket that is very popular here on RV. I ultimately chose this one because these blankets are basically felted whereas the other kind was not, which means that these blankets will be better at blocking wind if needed, and may be warmer overall, as well. In fact I compared this blanket with several others in the same price range and felt that this one was the best. I find the merino wool to be very soft and smooth (for a cheap wool blanket… it is still rougher than some other non-wool materials). Unlike many other similar wool blankets, these blankets really are not itchy, which is really nice. I expect you could comfortably have this blanket against your skin, whereas my other simple military-style wool blankets are a bit itchy and really are better used on top of another blanket. Because of the felted texture I expect low shedding, which can be a problem for some wool blankets. Also, there is a faint but distinct smell to them. I don’t know if I’d describe it as a chemical smell, but it’s not exactly the sweet lanolin smell that naturally accompanies wool either. We are an all-natural household and I have pretty low tolerance for any chemical smells around me (scented laundry detergent, perfume, cigarettes, gasoline, etc., are all intolerable), and the smell on these blankets doesn’t bother me, even though I wouldn’t describe it as pleasant. But, it’s pretty easy to ignore and I think that it will dissipate with time. The weight is very good… nice and heavy like a wool blanket should be, and it looks very durable. I have a couple of other wool blankets, including one military issue, that aren’t felted, and therefore have a fuzzier surface. I have really abused my military blanket and it is still holding up great, but based on the feel of these new blankets I expect these Wooly Mammoth blankets to be even more durable due to the dense felted weave. The dense felted weave also creates a very smooth surface that seems less likely to pick everything up like the standard military issue wool blankets can do.I’m going to try using one soon to see if they really will perform like I expect. If I am dissatisfied I will add to this review, but as of now I expect them to be at least as warm as my military issue, which is pretty awesome. Like other similar wool blankets, it is relatively thin (if you aren’t used to this it might shock you), but don’t let that discourage you… these kinds of wool blankets don’t need to be very thick to work great, which is why they are so commonly used in military issue. They provide a surprising lot of warmth with minimal bulk. They work. Generally you can throw one of this type of wool blanket over the top of your normal blanket on a cold night when your normal blanket isn’t adequate and it immediately makes a huge difference, so I always keep one at the foot of the bed of each of my family members. I haven’t had an opportunity to try these out yet, but based on the look and feel I expect them to perform on par with the others warmth-wise, or perhaps better. Again, I’ll add to this review if they don’t live up to my expectations. So, based on my initial examination and observations, I highly recommend and believe that this is a great quality product for the price.
